Requesting USCIS to Return Original Documents
In most petitions and applications filed with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”), the form instructions do not require the petitioners or applicants submit original documents. Those documents could be such as birth certificates or marriage certificates, depending on the nature and purpose of the petition or application. In most cases, photocopies of these documents are acceptable to the USCIS.
However, if you do submit an original document that you want it to be returned, USCIS says that you submit the original with a copy and request that the original be returned. If you do not submit a copy with the original, USCIS may choose to keep the original. To request the return of the original, you can file form G-884, Request for the Return of Original Documents with the USCIS office or Service Center where the case is pending, or that took the last action on the case if a final decision has been rendered. No filing fee required for this form.
